Launch your commercial driving career in less than a month with Kirkwood’s ELDT Class B to A CDL Fusion Program. Commercial driving continues to be an in-demand field with excellent local employment opportunities. In this program, you’ll learn the safe, professional driving skills required to earn your Class A CDL and begin a well-paying career.
This comprehensive program includes 90 hours of in-person and Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training, beginning with 50 hours of Class B skills and pre-trip instruction, followed by 40 hours of Class A training. Operating a semi requires specialized skills, including safe maneuvering and backing techniques. You will learn how to handle real-world backing scenarios such as straight-line, offset, parallel, blindside, and angle backing. Additional training includes navigating obstacles like vehicles, posts, curved entrances, docks, and building areas. Training is available using both manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
Kirkwood is an approved Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Training Provider. Course tuition includes 8 hours of online entry-level driver theory training and 90 hours of behind-the-wheel training completed over a three-week period.
After holding a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days and completing both the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) and the behind-the-wheel driving requirements, students must pass the CDL skills and driving test. To schedule the test, students must submit the CDL Drive Test Request form available on the Iowa Department of Transportation website:
