Is your child almost ready to get his or her driver's license? The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) requires everyone under the age of 18 to go through an approved driver education course. Our course meets all IDOT guidelines and regulations. This is a 36-hour course where you will have 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind the wheel driving (not part of the classroom time) covering all types of driving environments such as residential, downtown, two-lane highway and interstate. Kirkwood uses licensed driver education instructors. Our instructors are subject to annual background and driver license checks. All interested students must have an instruction permit to register. Please read:

Your log in information will be sent to you via email one day prior to the class start date. Email subject line: High School Driver Education (Hybrid) class log in information.
Technology requirements: classes can be taken on computer devices using the most up-to- date version of Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. Tablet devices can also be used with the following stipulations: Apple products must access the class using Safari and android devices must use Google Chrome.
Online portion of class must be completed by the stated class end date
The driving instructor will reach out to families individually to arrange driving lessons 1 week before the start date. Communication will be made via phone calls, emails, and text messages. Students must respond to the instructor's contact within 5 days of the class start date. Failure to respond will result in the student being dropped from the program.
Students who miss 2 scheduled drive times, without notifying the instructor in advance, will be dropped from the class and will not be eligible for a refund.
Drives may occur on weekends and evenings but please refer to the drive time (Lab) schedule for the range of options.
Students must present their permit each time they drive.
