This course will focus on developing a greater understanding of the expressiveness of charcoal. Students will primarily work in black and white dry media. We will begin with emphasizing the importance of quick-sketch exercises before moving onto the eventual/progressive refining and defining of objects in still life.

Please read:  Aside from a few listed brands for certain materials, I have no brand preference. However, I will recommend starting out with student-grade supplies as they will be more affordable, though you can certainly experiment with artist-grade supplies if you should choose. • 11x17 or 18x24 Newsprint Pad • 11x17 or 18x24 Charcoal Pad • Assorted Vine Charcoal (Dark Grey) or Willow Charcoal (Black) Sticks • General's Compressed Charcoal (Medium or Soft) • Kneadable Eraser • Pink Pearl Eraser or Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser • General's White Charcoal Pencil • Paper Blending Stumps • (Optional) Charcoal Pencils • (Optional) Chamois Cloth, fluffy paint brushes, or paper towels as alternative blending materials
