The following requirements must be completed before beginning the driving (LAB) portion of the class. Please note that some requirements may involve additional fees separate from the class tuition, as indicated:
- Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with air brakes, dated at least 14 days before the start of class: $12 (valid for 1 year).
- Register as a “student driver” in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse by the first day of class: https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register
- Clearinghouse query completed: $20–$55.
- Pre-employment drug screening completed within 30 days of class: $50–$100.
- DOT physical exam: $80–$150.
- Students will receive an email from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) 1–2 business days prior to the class start date, with a link to the ELDT Direct self-paced online course. The course typically takes 8–12 hours to complete. If you have not received the email by the end of the day on Monday, please contact our Registration Team at 319-398-1022 or contactce@kirkwood.edu. Once you receive access to the course, you will have two weeks to complete it. Please be sure to check your inbox as well as your spam or junk folder.
- ELDT online theory training must be completed before the first day of class. This training is student-paced through ELDT Direct.
- Provide or have your instructor verify copies of your Class B CLP, driver’s license, medical card, drug screen results, and Clearinghouse query results on the first day of class.
- A valid medical card (valid for 2 years) is required for students who plan to cross state lines.
