The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course is a comprehensive, beginner-friendly program. It includes a required five-hour online eCourse covering fundamental knowledge, a brief in-person session for paperwork and a pre-ride quiz, and 11 hours of hands-on riding instruction. Students must present proof of eCourse completion at the start of class and be able to balance and ride a bicycle. Motorcycles and helmets are provided by Kirkwood. To complete the course, participants must pass a riding skills evaluation. Graduates receive an MSF Completion Card and an IDOT Certificate of Completion. This waives the DOT motorcycle skills test (written test still required) and may qualify riders for insurance discounts. Participants must be at least 14 years old and hold a valid Iowa driver’s license or instruction permit. Those under 18 must have a parent or guardian attend the first class to sign paperwork.
