The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course is a comprehensive, beginner-friendly program. It includes a required five-hour online eCourse covering fundamental knowledge, a brief in-person session for paperwork and a pre-ride quiz, and 11 hours of hands-on riding instruction. Students must present proof of eCourse completion at the start of class and be able to balance and ride a bicycle. Motorcycles and helmets are provided by Kirkwood. To complete the course, participants must pass a riding skills evaluation. Graduates receive an MSF Completion Card and an IDOT Certificate of Completion. This waives the DOT motorcycle skills test (written test still required) and may qualify riders for insurance discounts. Participants must be at least 14 years old and hold a valid Iowa driver’s license or instruction permit. Those under 18 must have a parent or guardian attend the first class to sign paperwork.

Notice

Please read:
  • Participants must wear gloves, a long-sleeved shirt or jacket, long pants, and over-the-ankle footwear during the riding sessions.
  • A link to the required five-hour eCourse will be sent in your registration confirmation email. The eCourse must be completed before the first-Class session. Proof of completion (printed certificate or digital copy) is required at the start of class. For technical support, call 949-727-3227 ext. 3158.
  • The $25 eCourse fee is nonrefundable once registration is complete.
  • Students may bring their own helmet if it is DOT-approved (typically indicated by a DOT sticker).
  • Kirkwood has a variety of motorcycles, including different sizes. Instructors will work with students to find the best match.
  • Students who wish to use their own motorcycle must provide proof of current registration and insurance. However, students may not legally ride their motorcycle to class without a valid motorcycle endorsement.
  • Successful completion of this course waives the motorcycle driving skills test with the DOT; however, a written knowledge test is still required. Your Motorcycle Basic Rider Course completion certificate is valid for two (2) years from the date of issue and must be used within that time to add the motorcycle endorsement to your driver's license.
