This course is designed to be an overview of NFPA 1583 and ways for any fire department to incorporate a wellness and fitness program for their members. Often emphasized in social media among fire service personnel, firefighter line of duty deaths (LODDs) remain a consistent number annually despite efforts to implement safety protocols and practices. In addition, line of duty injuries and chronic illnesses are largely undocumented. Statistically, over half of the line of duty deaths are directly related to cardiac disease or sudden cardiac arrest and countless fire service personnel are forced to retire or resign earlier than desired due to cardiac disease or sudden cardiac incidents. While heart related issues are only one facet of the risks fire service personnel (career AND volunteer) face, often, it is one of the most preventable. When NFP A was evaluating the health of fire service personnel, NFP A 1583 was developed. Among other things addressed, NFP A 1583 addresses the value in investing in the most valuable asset in the fire service, its people. This course will demonstrate ways that any fire department, on any budget, can implement the guidelines and recommendations of NFPA 1583 and invest in the wellness and fitness of its members.
