Master Equine Management Certificate CPEQ-1000 

Turn your passion for horses into a career. This program will provide both classroom and hands-on horse management techniques that are essential whether you’re a horse owner, trainer, stable manager, farm employee, groom, or are looking to expand your horse knowledge. Over the course of this certificate program, you will learn about common equine health issues, reproductive care for both the mare and stallion including artificial insemination protocols, how to recognize and treat various lameness issues, and the importance of nutrients and proper feeding for horses at various life stages. A capstone class will wrap up the certificate program where students will tour successful horse operations and develop a business plan. Classes include: Basic Equine Health and Performance; Equine Reproduction; Equine Lameness; Equine Nutrition; Master Equine Management Capstone.

Program Completion Requirements:
This is a pass/fail certificate. Students will need to complete the final project portfolio components of this class in order to pass the certificate. Attendance is also a part of the requirement for obtaining the certificate. Students must attend a minimum of 80% of class to pass.

Course Objectives:
• Recognize various diseases of different equine body systems, as well as treatments for specific health problems
• Discuss current preventative medicine
• Learn how to purchase a healthy and sound horse
• Learn the normal reproductive cycle of the mare as well as various ways of synchronizing the mares’ cycles
• Discuss practices to maximize reproductive efficiency as well as recognizing and treating infertility issues
• Learn how to artificially inseminate a mare, and how to collect, evaluate, prepare, and ship stallion semen
• Recognize common signs of lameness in a horse and how to treat the issue
• Discuss how the horse digests food as well as understanding the importance of various nutrients
• Learn how to properly feed proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins
• Learn how to feed horses at various periods of their lives, how to properly feed broodmares and performance horses and how to feed for various health issues
• Discuss various equine programs and the opportunities in the industry
• Tour successful horse operations in the area

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this program, students should be prepared to work in the equine industry through classroom and hands-on learning of practical horse management techniques and creating a business plan.

Other Items to Know About this Course:
This course will meet in more than one location. The primary location will be the Iowa Equestrian Center, but other lab classes will meet at Abraham Equine Center in Cedar Rapids as well as tour local horse farms (locations vary per session). Students will need to be able to provide their own transportation to the different class, lab, and tour locations.
