This entry-level, comprehensive course will present the basics of wastewater sources, characteristics, operations, and regulations. The topics covered include biological treatment principles, wastewater math, and overview of the operation of preliminary, primary, and secondary treatment operations. This course and six months’ experience satisfy the eligibility requirements needed to take the state Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade I Exam. This is also a good review course for those preparing to take the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade II Exam.

Program Completion Requirements:
This is a pass/fail certificate. Students must attend all four days of training in order to complete the program.

Course Objectives:
• Describe procedures associated with monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting wastewater treatment processes.
• Perform basic laboratory analysis procedures.
• Review and describe how untreated wastewater can enter drinking water supplies.
• Understand the wastewater regulations and their impact on the SDWA.
• Be able to solve basic and intermediate math problems associated with wastewater treatment.
• Describe the practical aspects of plant operations and perform basic operational and maintenance procedures on equipment.
• Operate equipment, including hydraulics, pumps, valves, etc.
• Perform safety, security, and administrative procedures.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the program, students will have a better understanding of how wastewater treatment processes work and can help operate and maintain a wastewater treatment facility. Completing this course will also prepare those who are planning on taking the Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator Exam in the state of Iowa.
