The EMT certification is the foundational career-level program in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This comprehensive 168-hour course includes 120 hours of classroom instruction, 24 hours of hands-on experience in an emergency department, and 24 hours of ambulance and/or fire department ride-along time. This course equips students with the skills needed to work for fire departments and ambulance services. Many participants also enroll to gain personal knowledge or to enhance their marketability in various job sectors. Key skills taught include wound and fracture treatment, basic airway management, and automated defibrillation. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the National Registry of EMT (NREMT) exam. This course is connected with a Kirkwood College credit course. To successfully complete the program, students must pass all required components. Eligibility: Ages 17 and older.
