Bridge the language gap and enhance patient care by mastering essential Spanish for healthcare settings. This intensive course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with essential Spanish language skills to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. Through practical exercises and real-world scenarios, participants will learn key medical terminology, patient interview techniques, and phrases necessary for providing quality care in clinical settings. This course emphasizes common healthcare interactions with conversation as the primary focus, but both reading and writing skills are also covered. Students will learn pronunciation and basic grammar of the language structure including all relevant aspects that students need to have conversations. Learn about the Hispanic culture though a variety of projects and activities. Beyond basic vocabulary, students have the ability to choose what they will need for their particular career or interest. Book and materials are provided.

 Objectives:
1. Execute basic conversations with Spanish speakers
2. Formulate and ask relevant questions, and respond accurately, in healthcare-related conversations with Spanish-speaking patients
3. Demonstrate and apply basic competency in Hispanic cultural practices and perspectives to healthcare scenarios.

Please read:  Credit awarded upon completion of the course: up to 48 CEHs (Social Workers, Behavioral Scientists, PT/OT, RT's); or up to 40 Nursing Contact Hours (RNs, LPNs, NPs). Hours awarded are based on the hours attended or demonstration of meeting course objectives per the healthcare professionals governing body rules, completing the course evaluation, and passing the course. The health care professional successfully meeting these requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion indicating the CEH's or Nursing Contact Hours awarded for their profession by email. Nursing Contact Hours will be issued by Kirkwood Community College (Iowa Board of Nursing, Provider #30). All allied health professionals are reminded that they are responsible for reviewing the governing rules of their boards to determine if appropriate subject matter criteria will apply. Participants should be prepared to provide license information when registering. Course make-up date will be April 1st; 6-8pm.
