Iowa is making an amazing transition - low head dams are being removed, and in their place, we are growing white water opportunities here on our local rivers. If you have an interest in getting started in the sport, we can offer some thoughts and ideas on how to begin, what groups you may wish to join, and where you may want to look to connect with this community. While only you can really answer why - our guess is the thrill of the adventure - we are pleased to give you some direction and we'll be excited to see you grow in the sport! We will meet with you initially to give a basic brush up on gear and safety. Additional classes will include an introduction to eddies, basic stroke techniques, skills work taught through several brief river experiences, and then a visit to Manchester White Water Park to give it a go. This should give you a nice base to build on. Course is taught by two ACA-certified White water Kayak instructors. Co-sponsored by Linn County Conservation Dept., Cedar Rapids and Manchester Parks and Rec Departments with assistance from the Iowa Whitewater Coalition. Please be honest with your own self and with your capabilities in the water before committing to join us. Swimming and the ability to hold ones breath underwater is a requirement. We want you there if you are ready to try it! Registration closes on June 25th.
