This course is for those who desire a commercial driver career and have some knowledge of commercial vehicles or experience driving large vehicles, including commercial vehicles. This approved FMCSA Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) course is for interested students 18 years of age or older. To get a Class B CDL, you will utilize the Kirkwood Community College commercial vehicles to train and test for your license. After completion of the class, you will be able to drive qualifying Class B commercial vehicles such as a dump truck or bus with additional endorsements. Tuition includes ELDT online theory training, 30 hours of in-person behind-the-wheel (BTW) training. Tuition assistance may fund up to 100 percent of your registration cost for this program. After holding a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days and completing both the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) and the hands-on driving portion of the class, students are required to pass the CDL skills and drive test. To schedule this test, students must complete the CDL Drive Test Request form, available on the Iowa Department of Transportation website: Schedule a CDL Drive Test with the Iowa DOT.

Notice

Please read:  The following requirements must be completed prior to starting the driving portion (LAB) of class: • Class B Learner’s Permit (CLP) with air brakes dated at least 14 days prior to class: $12 (Valid for 1 year) • Register as a “student driver” on the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearing house by the first day of class (https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register) • Pre-employment Drug Screening must be completed within 30 days of class: $50-$100 • Clearinghouse Query completed: $20-55 • DOT Physical: $80-150 • ELDT online theory training must be complete prior to arrival for the first day of class. The online theory is a student-paced training through ELDT Direct. Students will get an email from the National Highway Safety Administration with the online link. • Copy of your Class B CLP, Driver's License, Medical Card, Drug Screen results and Query results will need to be provided to or verified by your instructor on the first day of class. • A valid medical card (Valid for 2 years is required for students wanting to cross state lines.
