Wines? From Iowa? That’s the response you’ll get from anyone in California, or most anywhere else, for that matter. But that’s because they haven’t heard about the latest grape-breeding developments from viticulturists in places like Minnesota and New York State. Cold-climate wines have blossomed from the old days of Catawba and Concord into exciting new varietals, such as La Crescent, Marquette, Petite Pearl, and Verona. With these raw materials, and rapidly developing knowledge about how to grow and treat cold-hardy wine grapes, our region is beginning to produce outstanding table wine. In this course, we’ll discuss and sample some of the best of the Midwest (with a peek at New York as well).
