« back to classes page
This class is intended to give the student an overview of ancient funeral and burial practices and how they have influenced our own funerary customs today. Studying burial customs, gravestones, and tombs can tell us much about a society’s past.  Such things speak for the dead. The class will highlight some of the customs and myths of Greece and Rome that have had an influence on our funeral art and our ideas of death and interment today. Learn some Latin phrases and abbreviations that are commonly found on old tombstones, as well as the different types of ancient and modern cemeteries that exist.  Individuals interested in ancient history, ancient burial and funeral practices, and ancient archaeology will find this class interesting.
