Ophthalmic Assistant

This non-credit program prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a valued member of the eye care team.  Ophthalmic Assistants work in hospital, clinic or office settings under the supervision of a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist.  Course content includes information on the specific duties of the Ophthalmic Assistant, common clinical eye disorders and ocular diseases, surgical procedures, medications, and instruments.  A two-week 80-hour clinical experience will be held immediately following the course end date and is required for course completion.  A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the Opthalmic Assistant course.  Textbook required (not included in cost of tuition): The Ophthalmic Assistant, 10th Edition, Stein, Stein & Freeman, (ISBN-13: 978-0323394772), available at Kirkwood’s main campus bookstore.

Notice

Please read:  Prior to registering, all students must take the Next-Generation Accuplacer reading placement test by contacting the Kirkwood Community College Test Center at 319-398-5456 in Cedar Rapids or 319-887-3642 in Iowa City. Applicant must achieve a minimum score of 245 to be considered eligible to register for the Ophthalmic Assistant program. After receiving their score, the applicant must contact the Program Director at 319-398-5626 to complete the registration process. All applicants must be at least 18 years old and have evidence of high school diploma or equivalent. Costs associated with the program that are not included in the tuition: textbook, background check fee ($45), immunization/health information tracking fee ($30) and any additional fees associated with the health requirements or clinical experience. Please note that evening or weekend hours are NOT available for the required 80-hour clinical experience. Students will be placed at an area clinical site and are responsible for their own transportation to their clinical assignment. Specific guidelines and student expectations for the clinical experience, including the background check process and health requirements, will be further explained during the first week of class.
