Central sterilization service technicians provide support to all patient care services in healthcare facilities. They are responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, processing, assembling, sterilizing, storing and distributing the medical devices and supplies needed in patient care, especially during surgery.  Most healthcare workers are considered essential, but few are as fundamentally important as sterile processing technicians. 

Our Central Sterilization Service Technician program is a 10-week, 100-hour, non-credit course prepares students for an exciting career in central sterile processing.  Coursework follows the requirements of the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), the leading authority on training and certification in the field.   At the end of the session, the eligible student will participate in a 40-hour clinical experience at an area hospital.  Clinical experiences will take place for the full-week immediately following the didactic portion of the class.  Students must be available for this one-week clinical experience in order to complete the course.  Coursework covers basic medical fundamentals such as medical terminology, anatomy, microbiology, and infection control, along with sterile processing basics that include: Identifying surgical instruments, Decontamination tools and processes, Disinfection, Low- and high-temperature sterilization methods, Point-of-use processing, Assembling surgical instrument trays, Inventory management, Safety protocols, Tracking systems, Quality assurance, Regulations and standards.

Notice

Please read:  This class will not meet March 16-20. The class will meet at the Kirkwood Regional Center Room 406 on Mondays and Room 218 on Wednesdays. Prior to registering, all students must take the free Next-Generation Accuplacer reading placement test by contacting the Kirkwood Community College Test Center at 319-398-5456 in Cedar Rapids or 319-887-3642 in Iowa City. Applicant must achieve a minimum score of 245 to be considered eligible to register for the Central Service Technician program. After receiving their score, the applicant must contact the Program Director at 319-398-5626 to complete the registration process. Student must be a minimum of 18 years old and have evidence of high school diploma or equivalent. Costs associated with the program that are not included in the tuition: textbook, background check fee ($45), immunization/health information tracking fee ($30) and any additional fees that may be associated with the clinical experience health requirements. Textbook required: Central Service Technician Manual, 8th Edition, IAHCSMM, ISBN: 9781495189043; Available at the Kirkwood bookstore. Please note: The student will be fully prepared to sit for the national IAHCSMM certification exam after becoming employed as a Central Service Technician. The cost of the certification exam is not included in the course fee.
