The IV Skills Lab is designed for registered nurses who are interested in updating their knowledge and skills in IV placement and infusion. This course will include a discussion of vein anatomy and selection, complications, advancements and technique. Students will identify the proper procedures and equipment used for peripheral IV placement and infusion therapy. Assessment for adverse responses and events will also be covered. Students will have the opportunity to utilize state of the art simulation equipment for this hands-on learning experience. The participant must be a registered nurse with an active Iowa license or, if inactive, must be eligible for re-licensure. Nursing contact hours will be awarded at course completion.
Objectives: 1) Discuss Nursing standards of practice in IV therapy, 2) Describe anatomy and physiology of the vascular system, 3) Identify peripheral veins appropriate for venipuncture, 4) Demonstrate a successful peripheral access attempt on IV manikin, and 5) Identify the potential for local and systemic complications associated with peripheral IV therapy.
