The noncredit Phlebotomist Training Course prepares students to function as a phlebotomist in a medical laboratory setting. Students will learn to obtain blood specimens via primary phlebotomy techniques in order to facilitate collection and testing.  Course content includes anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, medical terminology prefixes and suffixes, abbreviations and customer service skills.  Included in the cost of the course is an optional certification exam, which students may choose to take upon successful course completion.  A two-week 80-hour clinical experience is held at the end of the course and is required for course completion.  Textbooks required (not included in cost of tuition): Phlebotomy Essentials, 7thth Edition, McCall, (ISBN-13: 9781284209945) and Student Workbook for Phlebotomy Essentials, 7th Edition (ISBN-13: 9781284210194).   Both available at Kirkwood’s main campus and Iowa City bookstores.

Please read:  Prior to registering, all students must take the Next-Generation Accuplacer reading placement test by scheduling an appointment with the Test Center. You will need a k number prior to signing up for testing, if you do not have one please call 319-398-1269 to have one assigned to you. For a Test Center appointment please sign up by the following links; Cedar Rapids Test Center:, Coralville Test Center:, or Virtual Testing: Applicant must achieve a passing score of 245 to be considered eligible to register for the Plebotomy Technician Training Program. After receiving an eligible score, the applicant must submit score to Continuing Ed Health by Emailing: or calling 319-398-1269 for verification of scores and to complete the registration process pending funding/payment. All applicants must be at least 18 years old and have evidence of high school diploma or equivalent. Costs associated with the program that are not included in the tuition: textbook and workbook, background check fee ($45), immunization/health information tracking fee ($30) and any fees that may be associated with the health requirements. Please note that evening or weekend hours are NOT available for the required 80-hour clinical experience. Clinical sites are located throughout Kirkwood’s seven county area, with assignment to clinical sites by random selection. Students should not expect that their clinical site will be in the same city as their class. Students are responsible for their own transportation to their clinical assignment. Guidelines and student expectations for the clinical experience, including the background check process and health requirements, will be explained during the first week of class.
