Central sterilization service technicians provide support to all patient care services in healthcare facilities. They are responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, processing, assembling, sterilizing, storing and distributing the medical devices and supplies needed in patient care, especially during surgery.  Most healthcare workers are considered essential, but few are as fundamentally important as sterile processing technicians. 

Our Central Sterilization Service Technician program is a 10-week, 100-hour, non-credit course prepares students for an exciting career in central sterile processing.  Coursework follows the requirements of the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), the leading authority on training and certification in the field.   At the end of the session, the eligible student will participate in a 40-hour clinical experience at an area hospital.  Clinical experiences will take place for the full-week immediately following the didactic portion of the class.  Students must be available for this one-week clinical experience in order to complete the course.  Coursework covers basic medical fundamentals such as medical terminology, anatomy, microbiology, and infection control, along with sterile processing basics that include: Identifying surgical instruments, Decontamination tools and processes, Disinfection, Low- and high-temperature sterilization methods, Point-of-use processing, Assembling surgical instrument trays, Inventory management, Safety protocols, Tracking systems, Quality assurance, Regulations and standards. Textbook required.

Please read:  Prior to registering, all students must take the Next-Generation Accuplacer reading placement test by scheduling an appointment with the Test Center. You will need a k number prior to signing up for testing, if you do not have one please call 319-398-1269 to have one assigned to you. For a Test Center appointment please sign up through the test center website or by calling 319-398-5456. For website scheduling: Pick a location to test and Click the RegisterBlast button. (Step by step instructions are available on the left-hand side of the screen “How to Schedule an Exam Appointment”) You will choose: Placement Exams > Accuplacer> Reading Only, then continue filling out steps 4-7. Regional centers may be available for testing by appointment, please contact the regional center directly. Applicant must achieve a minimum score of 245 to be considered eligible to register for the Central Service Technician program. After receiving an eligible score, the applicant must submit scores to Continuing Ed Health by Emailing: or calling 319-398-1269 for verification of scores and to complete the registration process pending funding/payment. All applicants must be at least 18 years old and have evidence of high school diploma or equivalent. Costs associated with the program that are not included in the tuition: textbook, background check fee ($45), immunization/health information tracking fee ($30), update to date health physical current through the end of the clinical rotations, and any fees that may be associated with the health requirements and background check.
