The EFDA Bridge course is designed for the student who has previously completed some EFDA procedures, either through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education or elsewhere, and desires to complete additional Expanded Function procedures in order to obtain their Level 1 certification. This course will allow the student to register for the two new functions (Class 1 Temporary filling materials and Recementation of provisional restorations) plus an additional 2 functions of their choosing for a maximum of four functions. If more than 4 functions are needed to achieve Level 1 Certification, the student will not be eligible for the Bridge course and must register for the full EFDA course. Students interested in the Bridge Course must provide documentation of their previously completed EFDA coursework. If a student also needs the Monitoring of Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Analgesia procedure to satisfy their Level 1 Certification, Nitrous Oxide course is a separate registration and may not be included as one of their Bridge Course procedures. Coursework is completed through directed text readings along with evaluation measures and completion of clinical skills within the student’s dental office. The applicant must be currently employed in a dental office to participate in this course. Upon acceptance into Kirkwood’s EFDA Bridge Course, the student will be emailed information on scheduling a required orientation meeting with an instructor. Once the orientation is complete, the student will be approved to begin the coursework and they will have 6-months to complete the readings, education measures, and clinical documentation sheets. There will be on-line quizzes and a final test to complete the course. Iowa Dental Board-approved Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) will be awarded for each successfully completed function along with a certificate of completion.
