The noncredit Phlebotomist Training Course prepares students to function as a phlebotomist in a medical laboratory setting. Students will learn to obtain blood specimens via primary phlebotomy techniques in order to facilitate collection and testing. Course content includes anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, medical terminology prefixes and suffixes, abbreviations, and customer service skills. Included in the cost of the course is an optional certification exam, which students may choose to take upon successful course completion. A two-week 80-hour clinical experience is held at the end of the course and is required for course completion. Textbook purchases required (not included in cost of tuition): Phlebotomy Essentials, 7th Edition, McCall, ISBN-13: 9781284209945; and Student Workbook for Phlebotomy Essentials, 7th Edition ISBN-13: 9781284210194. Please read:  All applicants must be at least 18 years old and have evidence of high school diploma or equivalent. Costs associated with the program that are not included in the tuition: textbook, background check fee ($45), immunization/health information tracking fee ($38), update to date health physical current through the end of the clinical rotations, and any additional fees that may be associated with the health requirements. Your log in information will be sent to you via email two days prior to the class start date. Email subject line: Phlebotomist Training Course class log in information. Students must adhere to the attendance policy where no more than two classes may be missed during the Phlebotomy Program and no more than two clinical shifts missed. Please note that evening or weekend hours are NOT available for the required 80-hour clinical experience. Clinical sites are located throughout Kirkwood's seven county area, with assignment to clinical sites by random selection. Students should not expect that their clinical site will be in the same city as their class. Students are responsible for their own transportation to their clinical assignment.
