Kirkwood Community College offers DOT certified third party testing for individuals seeking to obtain a School Bus Commercial Driver’s License. There are three required tests that must be taken in the following order: Pre-Trip Test, Skills Test and Road Test. Prior to testing you must hold a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days before you can complete the required Pre-Trip, Skills and Road tests. This is the first of three required tests that you will need to pass prior to obtaining your CDL. You must pass the Pre-Trip test prior to taking the Skills Test and the Road Test. If you fail this test you will need to retake this test. To retake the test you will need to call 319-398-1022 to repay and register again for the test. There is a 24 hour wait time before retesting can take place. You will need to provide your own vehicle and proof of insurance. You will need to self-identify if you are driving across state lines (interstate) or only driving in Iowa (intrastate). Upon successfully passing all three required tests you may obtain your School Bus Commercial Driver’s License at any driver's license issuance location.
