The EMT is the first career-level certification program in EMS. This 168 hour program, 120 hours of classroom experience, 24 hours Emergency department experience, 24 hours of ambulance ride time. This course prepares the student for work in fire departments and ambulance services. Many individuals take this course for personal knowledge or to enhance their marketability in other jobs. Skills include treatment of wounds and fractures, basic airway management, and automated defibrillation. Those who complete the course are eligible for National Registry of EMT testing. This course is interconnected with a Kirkwood College credit course. To successfully complete this course, students must pass all required components as this class qualifies as a pathway into a Kirkwood credit program.
