Kirkwood Community College offers DOT certified third party testing for individuals seeking to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL A). There are three required test that must be taken in the following order: Pre-Trip, Skills Test and Road Test. Once registered, a Kirkwood staff member will contact you, via phone, to set up testing times. Due to DMV requirements, testing will be at least 72 hours AFTER registration. This is the second test of three required tests that you will need to pass prior to obtaining your CDL. You must have successfully passed the Pre-Trip test prior to taking the Skills test, and successful pass the Skills Test before taking the Road Test. If a test is failed, tester will need to reregister and retake it before moving to the next test type. There is a 24 hour waiting period between. Upon successfully passing all three required tests, you may obtain your CDL at any driver's license issuance location.

Notice

Please read:  The following requirements must be completed prior to testing and proof must be brought on the day of testing:
  • Commercial License Permit (CLP) dated at least 14 days prior to testing (CLP is valid for 1 year)
  • Proof of insurance for vehicle used during testing. Kirkwood does have vehicles for use but will cost an additional $150 fee
  • Testers who have received their Commercial License Permit (CLP) on or after Feb. 7, 2022 must complete an Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT); if permit was received prior to Feb. 7, 2022 additional training is not required. Once complete, record of completion must be uploaded to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/)
  • DOT Long Form Physical within the last two years
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen Screening must be completed within 10 days of the testing
  • A valid medical card
  • Register as a driver on the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearing house (https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register)
