The EMT is the first career-level certification program in EMS. This is a 168 hour program: 104 hours of online didactic experience, 16 hours of in-person lab experience, 24 hours Emergency department experience, 24 hours of ambulance ride time. This course prepares the student for work in fire departments and ambulance services. Many individuals take this course for personal knowledge or to enhance their marketability in other jobs. Skills include treatment of wounds and fractures, basic airway management, and automated defibrillation. Those who complete the course are eligible for National Registry of EMT testing. This course is interconnected with a Kirkwood College credit course. To successfully complete this course, students must pass all required components as this class qualifies as a pathway into a Kirkwood credit program.
The hybrid format is perfect for the individual who needs maximum flexibility to achieve the EMT credential. Students can access and complete classroom lectures, assignments, and quizzes at their convenience. Also, students are allowed to complete course materials at their own pace within the overall class dates. Students must be 17 years or older to register for this course.

Please read:  In addition to the online, didactic component of class, learners are required to attend 16 hours of lab on-site for 4 evenings and 48 hours of hospital & field time (scheduled independently). Textbook will be provided. Tuition covers all charges except the following: IDPH certification application, state psychomotor exam, and National computer exam.
