There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for; such as tornadoes, floods, pandemics, or even a zombie apocalypse. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you participated, and hey, maybe you will even learn a thing or two about how the laboratorians at the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa (SHL) prepare for a real emergency. In this interactive session, you will learn about how laboratorians at the State Hygienic Laboratory collaborate with other organizations to respond to real and simulated emergencies. Through interactive activities, you will solve a mystery to find the source of an outbreak, engage in a role-playing scenario to figure out how to work together on a team to respond to a zombie attack as a way to simulate how emergency responders plan for a real-world event (e.g. an Ebola or influenza outbreak). Ages 10-14.
