Phlebotomist Training Course CHHO-6000

This course will prepare you to enter the health care profession as a phlebotomist. The phlebotomist is an important member of the health care team whose responsibility is to facilitate safe collection and transportation of blood and other laboratory specimens. The student will learn anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, medical terminology, customer service skills, and equipment techniques utilizing vacuum collection devices and syringes. Following the comprehensive classroom training, students will participate in a two-week, hands-on clinical experience to demonstrate their learned skills and knowledge in the medical environment.

Industry Credentials Earned:
Completion of this course will qualify the student to take the National Health Career Association Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam, which is included in the tuition of the course, and is optional to take. This exam is not required in order to work as a phlebotomist in Iowa.

Entrance Requirements/Prerequisites:
Prospective students must be 18 years of age or older and have evidence of high school diploma or equivalent. A physical, background check, and immunization documentation must be completed before students are cleared for the clinical experience.

Length of Program and CEU Credits:
140 hours, 16.8 CEUs

Program Completion Requirements:
This is a pass/fail course based on both score and attendance. Tests and quizzes taken in class must total a score of 75 percent or greater before students may satisfy the completion requirements of the clinical experience. Students must also adhere to the attendance policy where no more than two clinical shifts may be missed.

Course Objectives:
• Understand the health care system and the role of the phlebotomist.
• Maintain confidentiality of privileged information on individuals.
• Describe the system of monitoring quality assurance and quality control in the collection of blood and other laboratory specimens.
• Define the different terms in the Medico legal aspect for phlebotomy, and discuss policies and protocols designed to avoid Medico legal problems.
• Exhibit top notch safety and infection control in the healthcare setting.
• Learn and correctly use basic medical terminology.
• Understand the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system.
• Identify equipment and supplies needed to perform phlebotomy.
• Perform routine venipuncture, capillary procedures, and point-of-care testing.
• Describe complications of blood drawing and their resolutions.
• Explain the principles behind — and list any special equipment required and the steps involved — special collection procedures.
• Discuss collection of non-blood specimens.
• Perform a minimum of 100 unaided, successful venipunctures using vacuum collection devices and syringes in a clinical lab setting.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the program, students will know medical terminology, anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system and hands-on practice to work as an entry-level phlebotomist in a medical laboratory setting. Students will also be prepared to take the optional Certified Phlebotomist Technician exam at the end of the course.

Students must provide their own transportation to clinical assignments.
