This is an entry-level, comprehensive course designed to teach the principles of water treatment plant operations. The course will cover sources of water, the treatment process, plant operations, safety protocols, water quality regulations, and waterworks math. This course and six months’ experience satisfy the eligibility requirements needed to take the state Water Treatment Plant Operator Grade I Exam. This is also a good review course for those preparing to take the Water Treatment Plant Operator Grade II Exam.

Industry Credentials Earned:
Completion of this course, plus six months of experience, will qualify the student to take the State Certification test in Iowa to become a Water Treatment Plant Operator, Grade I.

Program Completion Requirements:
This is a pass/fail certificate. Students must attend all four days of training in order to complete the program.

Course Objectives:
• Establish procedures associated with monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting water treatment processes.
• Perform basic laboratory analysis procedures.
• Describe drinking water regulations and their impact on water treatment.
• Solve basic and intermediate math problems associated with water treatment.
• Identify practical aspects of plant operations and perform basic operational and maintenance procedures on equipment.
• Perform safety, security, and administrative procedures.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the program, students will have a better understanding of how water treatment processes work and can help operate and maintain a water treatment facility. Completing this course will also prepare those who are planning on taking the Grade I Water Treatment Operator Exam in the state of Iowa.
